Our client is seeking a mid-to-senior Legal and Governance specialist to provide second-line legal, regulatory and governance support across the organisation. The consultant will provide commercial legal advice, review and vet contracts, support litigation strategy and help ensure policies, frameworks and contractual arrangements comply with applicable regulatory requirements.

The successful candidate must be an admitted attorney with an LLB and approximately 5–8 years' post-admission experience, ideally gained within financial services industry. Strong knowledge of the South African insurance regulatory environment the Prudential Authority and FSCA will be particularly valuable. 

Key Activities 

• Provide commercial legal advice to the organisation. 
• Provide legal support within RMA's social insurance business and broader regulated financial services environment. 
• Review and vet commercial contracts, outsourced third-party and material outsourcing agreements. 
• Assess contracts against regulatory requirements and prescribed standards. 
• Provide strategic oversight and review of litigation matters. 
• Support dispute resolution and litigation management. 
• Conduct legal research and prepare legal opinions. 
• Interpret regulatory directives and advise the business on their implications and support teams engaging with regulators. 
• Review policies against relevant legislation, regulation and governance standards and support the implementation and review of organisational policies. 
• Review governance frameworks and ensure alignment with applicable standards and regulatory requirements. 

Minimum Requirements  

• LLB. 
• Admitted Attorney. 
• Approximately 5–8 years' post-admission experience. 
• Strong commercial legal advisory experience. 
• Strong contract review and vetting experience. 
• Experience within financial services. 
• Understanding of financial services legislation and regulation. 
• Familiarity with the Prudential Authority and FSCA regulatory environment. 
• Litigation management and dispute resolution exposure. 
• Strong legal research and legal opinion writing skills. 

Desirable 

• LLM. 
• Insurance or banking experience.
