Project Overview

Our client is building a finance module for a UAE insurer — covering the general ledger and accounting, reinsurance, and IFRS 17 reporting. We are looking for a senior insurance domain consultant to be the bridge between the insurance and finance business and the delivery team.

This is a validation-and-translation role, not a coding role, and not an actuarial role. The actuarial estimates come from the client's appointed actuary; your job is to make sure the system reproduces the insurance, reinsurance and IFRS 17 logic correctly, to validate that the outputs reconcile to the source, and to explain the rules clearly to developers, QA and the client's business teams.

Key Activities

  • Review and refine BRDs and FRDs, and prepare clear business and finance workflows.
  • Explain the insurance and reinsurance rules and the finance calculations to the delivery team, so nothing is built on a guess.
  • Validate premium, reinsurance and IFRS 17 outputs by reconciliation — to the core system and to the signed source documents (treaty slips, the appointed actuary's reports). Validation here means proving the numbers tie out, not eyeballing them.
  • Support client meetings and workshops, and help the client's teams work through the open business points before build.
  • Support the QA team and guide developers on the insurance and finance logic behind what they are building.
  • Review UAT before every release, and sign off that the domain behaviour is correct.

Your Background

Essential

  • 5-8+ years in insurance, with hands-on experience in the UAE / GCC market.
  • Worked inside the Finance, Reinsurance or Actuarial function of an insurer — or in a consultancy serving them.
  • Owned or led a workstream on an IFRS 17 implementation — not simply attended one. This is the single most important qualification.
  • Hands-on experience with reinsurance accounting and treaty administration (statements, recoveries, bordereaux).

Insurance

  • Motor, Medical, Property, Marine, Engineering, Liability.

Reinsurance

  • Facultative, Treaty, Quota Share, Surplus, Excess of Loss, Catastrophe Cover, RI recoveries, RI statements, Bordereaux, Commission calculations.

Finance & Accounting

  • General Ledger, Chart of Accounts, Premium accounting, Claims accounting, Commission accounting, Broker accounting, Unearned Premium Reserve (UPR), Outstanding Claims Reserve, IBNR, Deferred Acquisition Costs, Financial statements, integration with ERP / finance systems.

IFRS 17

  • Premium Allocation Approach (PAA) — primary, as the business is predominantly short-duration, Reinsurance contracts held, Risk Adjustment, Insurance revenue, Liability for Remaining Coverage (LRC), Liability for Incurred Claims (LIC), financial disclosures.
  • GMM / CSM awareness is sufficient — needed only for any long-tail line, not as a day-to-day model.

Technical Understanding — No Coding Required

You will not write code, but you must be comfortable working alongside those who do, and speak their language:

APIs and system integration — enough to reason about how data moves between systems.

  • Business rules — how a business requirement becomes a rule the system enforces.
  • BRD / FRD — reading, reviewing and refining requirement and functional-spec documents.
  • UAT — designing and reviewing acceptance tests.
  • Data mapping — mapping business data to system fields and accounts.
  • Insurance and finance workflow end to end.

Desirable

A strong plus: experience with a core insurance policy-administration / general-ledger system (Premia or equivalent) and with system migrations.

How Success Is Measured

  • The module's outputs — premium, reinsurance, provisions, IFRS 17 — reconcile to the source for each period.
  • Each part of the module reaches business sign-off with the client's teams.
  • The rules are unambiguous before build, so rework is the exception, not the norm.
