Our client is looking for an experienced Group Risk Underwriter to assist on an hourly basis with the underwriting of applications for group risk cover. The role involves assessing and making underwriting decisions on applications for life, income protection, and critical illness benefits, ensuring that each case is handled efficiently and with sound clinical and risk judgement.
Contract Type: Hourly-based contract (10–20 hours per month)
Location: Remote (with flexibility)
Key Responsibilities:
- Underwrite group risk benefits including death, income protection, and critical illness.
- Review applications using reinsurer manuals, clinical information, and professional judgement to determine eligibility and recommend terms or exclusions.
- Prepare and issue underwriting decision letters and requests for additional medical information to applicants and medical service providers.
- Support the resolution of complex or escalated cases, particularly those involving high-profile employees.
Requirements:
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in underwriting group risk benefits.
- Strong knowledge of reinsurer underwriting manuals and ability to apply clinical reasoning in decision-making.
- Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear and professional correspondence.
- Proven ability to work independently and manage cases efficiently within agreed timeframes.
Advantageous:
- Experience working on Compass and/or Chorus/AWD workflows.
- Underwriting authority limits of R60 000 or higher.
- Experience handling complex or high-value underwriting cases.
